The vibrant metropolis of Cebu City lies on the eastern shore of the
island and is an important center for commerce, trade and industry. Cebu City is the second largest and oldest city in the Philippines with a rich blend of history and culture dating back to early trade with China, Siam and Arabia. Impressive architecture dates back to the 16th century when the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan settled here.
Mactan Island is connected to Cebu by the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and is home to
many internationally recognized five star resorts.
Mactan Island is where the first clashes took place between local tribes and Spanish explorers.
In 1521 Ferdinand Magellan was killed by the Visayan leader
Lapu-Lapu.
Located on the west coast of Cebu Island is the small town of Moalboal which is well-known for its incredible diving. Panagsama Beach is home to an extraordinary array of coral, anemones, sponges, and a host of brightly colored reef fish. A range of
adventurous activities are available in the mountainous vicinity including superb
canyoning, river climbing, caving and abseiling.
